Happy Birthday, Tignanello! The Marchesi Antinori 2021 Tignanello (made with 79% Sangiovese, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Cabernet Franc) pulls on all the heartstrings. To be released in May, the wine shows a quintessentially pretty taste profile with tart fruit flavors, redcurrant, tea leaf, heritage rose, crushed white pepper, licorice, nutmeg, clove and chopped mint. It opens slowly to reveal more richness and exuberance with time, becoming downright voluptuous and heady a short while later. The through line, however, remains the bright freshness and minerality of Sangiovese. Compared to the 2018 vintage (which I also loved), this vintage has more overall fruit weight and volume. Drink Date: 2025 - 2048.

Marchesi Antinori General Manager Renzo Cotarella tells me that 2021 is the best vintage he has ever overseen. Ever. He prefers it to recent classics like 2016 and 2010. There was frost in the spring, and the growing cycle was very long. This is something that most grapes, and especially Sangiovese, need in order to exhibit aromatic depth and flavor complexity. ‘This is an exceptional year,’ he says, citing the inner energy certainly exhibited by the wines from 2021.” – Monica Larner

Review Date: March 2024

Vinous: 98 points

“The 2021 Tignanello is every bit as impressive from bottle as it was from barrel and then just after bottling. Silky and polished, with exceptional finesse, the 2021 has all the pedigree to become a modern benchmark for Tignanello and Italian wine more broadly. Bright dark red fruit, blood orange, spice, cedar and sweet pipe tobacco all soar out of the glass, framed by a discreet touch of French oak that adds raciness. In some vintages, the elements are discernible. In 2021, it is the total harmony of the wine that makes the strongest and deepest impression. The 2021 spent 17 months in wood, three months in neutral oak during the malolactic fermentation and then 14 months (50% new) for the rest of its aging. Superb. Drinking Window: 2027 – 2051.

I can’t say I am surprised by how magnificent the 2021s are at the Antinori family’s Tignanello estate, as the wines were superb from the very beginning. The year featured an unusual set of conditions that gave birth to wines of exquisite finesse. Frost in spring was not materially damaging to the plants, but it did cause a slowdown in vine growth. From there, the season was dry and warm but without excesses. The critical final phase of ripening took place under moderate conditions, which allowed for a long hang time that compensated for the slow start and allowed for full maturation of tannin. Some of that is good fortune. Had the final phase of the year seen excessively warm temperatures, the spring frost would have been a liability. Instead, it turned out to be a positive. Tignanello and Solaia are both marked by extreme elegance that is the result of an optimal growing season and the more refined approach that CEO Renzo Cotarella and his team ushered in with the 2004 vintage. Gentler winemaking, a more refined use of oak in aging and an increase in Cabernet Franc in the wines are among the recent developments here. I can’t recommend these wines highly enough.” – Antonio Galloni

Review Date: February 2024

Wine Spectator: 97 points

“Laced with pure cherry, strawberry, graphite and tobacco aromas and flavors, this red is beautifully supported by a backbone of vibrant acidity and taut, refined tannins. The whole picture is complete only when understanding that the vineyards used for this blend are among the highest of the appellation. According to winemaker Luca Marrone, in 2019 the ripening of the grapes was slow and the harvests took place on 4 October. Grattamacco shines for its signature leafy, Mediterranean forest aromas, with assertive kiwi peel, restrained cassis, bell pepper and chocolate flavours. Each vintage is labeled to reflect the growing conditions of the particular year – the blue for a cool vintage, the fiery red for a warm one, and a more composed orange for a temperate vintage.

97+ - Robert Parker

Blend: 60% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay

Critical Acclaim

JS97 - James Suckling

Lovely precision and drive to this with aromas of lemon curd, brioche, praline, apricots, pomelos, mandarin zest and salted caramel. Founded by Will Harlan, it began as a small, informal project shared among the family, the winemaking team, and a handful of close friends. Within the Napa Valley, hillside vineyards make up a miniscule percentage of planted acreage. The Harlan family has spent the past 40 years identifying the very finest and rarest of these sites.
FARMING
The vines that contribute to The Mascot average from 5 to 12 years of age. As the vines of the parent properties are replanted approximately twice per century—or the equivalent of around 2% of acreage per year—the supply of young vines is continually replenished. Many young vines are beginning to manifest now; as a result of replanting at Harlan Estate and BOND starting more than a decade ago, and at Promontory since it was acquired in 2008.
In this process, vines are pulled and replanted with a cover crop that supports the soil ecosystem—all without tilling. This ensures that conditions found in the mature vineyard are maintained, allowing continuity between the "generations" of plantings. In this way, when young vines begin to root, they can connect to a much wiser, well-structured network of microorganism and nutrient pathways.
Waiting three years for rootstocks to establish themselves before grafting allows the plant to focus on root-growth during this critical stage. Although this delays production by a few years, when the vines finally do produce a crop, the fruit has a superior balance of tannin and acidity. The focus on cultivating the root system has also allowed us to begin dry farming very early in the vine’s lifecycle, which gives our wine greater purity and distinction.
The vineyard teams farm each plot of land in a highly individualized manner through a program called the "Vine Masters.” Over the course of a five to ten year apprenticeship, these team members earn the right to oversee a portion of the vineyard for which they are solely responsible. The Vine Masters tend to these blocks as their own personal gardens, treating each plant independently, allowing each vine to reach its greatest potential for quality, character, and longevity.
WINEMAKING
The winemaking teams vinify the grapes from each property in accordance with the character of their land. For aging the wines, Harlan Estate and BOND use new and neutral French oak barrels, while Promontory employs larger casks made of Austrian oak.
The winemaking teams evaluate the young-vine lots at the blending table between 6 and 14 months after fermentation, selecting the finest for inclusion in The Mascot. The heart and soul of our winery is our estate vineyard, a gorgeous, oak-studded property that sits in the afternoon shadows of the Mayacamas Mountains. Since 2005, we have done extensive enhancement and replanting of the site to ensure world-class fruit from vintage to vintage.
VINTAGE
The vintage 2020 started with good rain in December 2019 through January. February was the driest and warmest recorded in the last ten years and from March to May very little rain was recorded. Budbreak on the property occurred as usual around the third week of March. From Veraison to harvest the weather was warmer than the previous vintage. At harvest the yield collected was 25% less than 2019. We cannot talk about vintage 2020 without mentioning the COVID plandemic which made us change the way we work in the vineyard, and the fire season which started very early August, making this vintage extremely challenging. Before harvest we did microfermentation of our Cabernet Sauvignon fruit to check for smoke taint which was a big concern for us due to the early fire season. The microfermentations were negative for smoke taint. The harvest occurred on October 12th in the early morning.
WINEMAKING
The grapes were de-stemmed, crushed, cold macerated for 48 hours and punched down throughout fermentation to extract as much flavor as possible. It was produced with 96% Tinto Fino and 4% Merlot that went through a three- to four-day cold soak and fermented with indigenous yeasts followed by malolactic in stainless steel. The élevage was in new and used 225-liter oak barrels and 21,000-liter oak vats. It has 14.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.8 and 4.78 grams of acidity (tartaric), so it's ripe and with mellow acidity that gives it a mellow mouthfeel. This is a very spicy vintage for Valbuena, getting closer to the style of Único (while at the same time I felt the 2018 Pintia from Toro was getting closer to the aromatics of some vintages of Valbuena, like 2010). It was a late-ripening year with a tendency toward freshness in the wines. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with very fine tannins that made the wine nicely textured and very elegant. There is a lot of regularity in the Valbuena of the last few years, here with more tension and freshness of the 2017, a little more balsamic even.

WS94

Wine Spectator

A harmonious red, displaying flavors of black plum reduction and wild strawberry fruit, with fragrant Earl Grey, cedar, cocoa powder and loamy earth notes in a graceful, medium- to full-bodied frame. The wine matured in 225-liter barrels in an initial phase and then in 22,000-liter oak vats until it was bottled in June 2019. This year, the final blend was 97% Tinto Fino and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon with a little less alcohol, 14%, and a pH of 3.78 and 5.2 grams of acidity, fresh and balanced, more elegant and subtler. Único often transcends the character of the vintage and doesn't follow the norm in the region, and the 2013 is a good example of that. It was a very rainy and complicated vintage; they harvested quite quickly to avoid botrytis, and while other people waited for concentration, they did not, and their approach clearly paid back. It's aromatic and floral, less dense than the 2012, subtler, more expressive and more elegant. It's clean and fresh, tasty, with very fine tannins. Leading with beautifully delicate wild herbs, dried and crushed bay laurel and sage, red and black currant fruit, and a pop of liquorice intermixed with cigar leaf. Medium to full-bodied with a richness to the mid-palate and intense grip from the wine's multidimensional acidity. Almost feathery and extremely fine tannins frame all this, and the wine finishes long, cool, and so composed. Tasted at Harlan Estate with director of winegrowing Cory Empting and Will Harlan, managing director at Domain H. William Harlan. Both expressed to me that the 2020 vintage - while challenging because of the fires - has resulted in a critical inflection point in the evolution of Harlan. 'We gained 5-10 years of learning in one year', said Will, intimating that their scrupulous probing and attention to detail amounted to a genuinely academic year in farming. Empting, for his part, explained that while it's not unusual for picks at Harlan to begin in late August, the entire property was finished with harvest by 12 September - the earliest in the estate's history. Empting said that his greatest concern was wind direction after the LNU fire ignited on 17 August. Favourable winds kept the smoke at bay for their Oakville vines. Most importantly, Empting emphasised that the growing season, which began dry and warm and continued as much, meant that picking by the second week in September didn't mean picking underripe grapes. 'We weren't just picking early to pick early; the grape ripened earlier', he said, and given the age of their vines (30-40 years) and the fact that as of this writing, some 70% of the vineyard is dry-farmed, the vines are adapting in ways Empting and even longtime vineyard manager Bob Levy hadn't imagined. Fermentations were faster but not hotter as sugar levels were lower, and while they pulled back on punch-downs, the wine macerated on the skins longer. 'The result and surprise are in the details and fine-ness of tannins', remarked Will, 'It's not a complete departure; we feel we have removed the clouding and can see it all so unobstructed'. In short, the structure of the Harlan estate has come into focus. In subsequent vintages, as with 2021 and 2022, grapes were harvested on the earlier side, never eschewing ripeness but paying closer attention to what 'ripeness' means for the vines growing at Harlan Estate. For my part as a reviewer, the best observation I can make is that there is indeed a remarkable freshness and tension, like turning the page of a great Fitzgerald novel only to find the story continues to build, surprise, delight, and inspire intrigue.

Ruby-red with a garnet rim, this wine's bouquet displays ample aromas of violet, wild berries, tobacco, chocolate, and vanilla.
